Chelsea’s Emerson Palmieri completes year-long Loan move to Serie A side Olympique Lyonnais

Chelsea’s Italian left back Emerson Palmieri has joined Serie A side Olympique Lyonnais on a year-long deal until the summer of 2022. The defender was an important member of Italy’s Euro 2020 winning squad and also played a key role in their playing XI after AS Roma full-back Leonardo Spinazzola suffered a long-term injury during the knockout stages of the European Championship.

Olympique Lyonnais had been in the lookout for the Italian ever since his impressive display at the Euro 2020 with the Azzurri’s. Chelsea, who were looking to offload the left back due to overcrowding of the position, were more than happy to negotiate a deal with the Serie A side. However, the blues only wanted a loan deal and were not ready for a permanent move. Lyon paid heed.

Chelsea first extended Emerson’s contract till 2023 and only then sent him out on loan to the French club.

Lyon have signed Emerson on a 1 year loan from Chelsea for a €500k fee + €500k bonus fee and a priority “match-up clause”.

Emerson Palmieri was born in Brazil and it was there that he started his career as a footballer at Santos U20 in 2012. He was then loaned out by the Brazilian club to U.S Palermo of Italy. During this time, he changed his national allegiance to Italy. After his loan spell got over, Serie A giants AS Roma initially acquired Emerson on loan in 2015 and then signed him permanently in 2017. The very next year, the left-back was signed by Chelsea which was his big money move.

Despite being at a top-tier club of the best Football league in the world, Emerson Palmieri failed to remain in the spotlight for a long time as he seldom got any chance to prove himself. After 3-years at Chelsea, he has finally decided to find some gametime elsewhere and thus the loan move to Olympique Lyonnais.
