Cyborg married fellow MMA fighter Evangelista “Cyborg” Santos and “adopted” his nickname. The couple divorced in December 2011. She became a naturalized US citizen in 2016. In 2017, Cyborg confirmed her engagement to longtime boyfriend, trainer, and former MMA fighter Ray Elbe. Cyborg formally adopted her niece in 2018, making her the first mother to carry a UFC championship belt.

Justino made her professional debut in mixed martial arts at the age of 19 on May 17, 2005, at Showfight 2 against multiple-time world BJJ champion Erica Paes before integrating the nickname “Cyborg.” Paes was five years her senior and the first woman to train in the famed Brazilian Top Team academy, which competed with Cyborg’s Chute Boxe gym.
Cyborg was defeated by submission in the first round, her lone professional loss in MMA until 2018, when she was defeated for the second time in her career by Amanda Nunes. Although Paes’ style of victory was officially recorded as a kneebar submission, Cyborg’s side alleges she tapped out due to an elbow injury received during the bout.
Cyborg won her maiden MMA fight after losing her debut. She defeated Vanessa Porto by unanimous decision. She then went on to win her next three fights in the Brazilian promotion Storm Samurai by first-round TKO, bringing her record to 4-1.
