Dan Severn Career
In 1976 he won national titles in both sports and became the “Outstanding High School Wrestler in the Nation.” Before his 18th birthday, he came in sixth in the country in the open division and qualified for the Olympic trials. After his undergraduate career, Severn was inducted into Arizona State University’s wrestling hall of fame.
From 1982 through 1994, Severn competed in some tournaments that led him to Japan, Hungary, Cuba, France, and Turkey. Severn won a new championship on each trip. During those years, he also won 13 National AAU wrestling titles. As he continued to compete and grow after his undergraduate career, The Beast also tried his hand at teaching wrestling at ASU and Michigan State University.

Severn began competing in the Ultimate Fighting Championships (UFC) in 1994. In his UFC 4 debut against Anthony Macias, he stunned many UFC fans by executing two great back suplexes. Severn was defeated in the finals by Royce Gracie, who secured the victory with a triangle hold. Severn’s submission defeat happened after he fought Gracie’s submission attempts for 15 minutes, the most extended UFC bout to that point. He was the first world-class wrestler to fight in the UFC, foreshadowing the dominance of Don Frye and Mark Coleman in UFC 8 and 9, respectively.
Severn quickly returned to mixed martial arts competition and won the tournament championship at UFC 5: Return of the Beast by defeating multiple opponents. At UFC 5, Severn fought the Russian Oleg Taktarov for the second time. After the referee stopped the fight due to a cut, he won by TKO. After winning UFC 5, Severn faced Ken Shamrock at UFC 6 to determine the first UFC Superfight Champion. However, Severn was quickly submitted by Shamrock in the first round.
On March 20, 2016, Severn was scheduled to face fellow mixed martial arts veteran Ken Shamrock in an MMA match for the new URFight promotion. However, Shamrock claimed he was injured during his bout with Royce Gracie at Bellator 149, and he was subsequently suspended after a positive drug test on his pre-fight blood sample.
The fight was canceled after Tank Abbott failed a pre-fight physical and was replaced late. Later, Severn appeared at the event and expressed his desire to continue his fighting career and compete at a future URFight event. Later, Severn issued a statement condemning Shamrock’s actions and calling his injury claims into issue.
