Deepika Kumari Biography: Born on 14th June 1994, DEEPIKA KUMARI is an Indian international level archer and hails from RatuChatti village, Ranchi, Jharkhand, India. She is currently ranked as the World’s No.1 archer. DeepikaKumari is conferred with Arjuna Award in 2012 and Padma Shri in 2015. She is known for her incredible skills in Recurve Archery. Kumari currently plays for the Indian women’s team and has qualified for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

Deepika Kumari Biography: Early Life

Deepika was born on 13th June 1994 in RatuChatti village in the Ranchi District of Jharkhand, India, to financially hindered parents Shivnarayan Mahato (father) and Geeta Mahato (mother).

She had an accurate aim from a very early age and practiced while shooting at the mangoes with stones. Her family was not financially wealthy to buy proper equipment for archery; rather, she practiced using bamboo bows and arrows. 

In 2005, she joined Arjun Archery Academy in Kharasawan to get professional training. Later in 2006, she signed at the Tata Archery Academy through her cousin, an archer. Her professional training started from this academy where she practised with proper uniform and equipment with a 500 Rupees remuneration fee.

Deepika Kumari Biography: Career

  • Deepika started practicing archery from a very small age shooting at mangoes with stones. Not capable of buying archery equipment, so she made bows and arrow’s with the help of bamboos.
  • In 2005 she joined the Arjun Archery Academy, Kharasawan. But later in 2006, with the help of her cousin, she joined the Tata Archery Academy, Jamshedpur, who also trained at that academy.
  • From here, Deepika started her professional archery career practicing with proper uniforms and archery equipment with a remuneration of 500 Rupees per month.
  • In the 2006 Archery World Cup in Mexico, she became the second Indian archer to win the PaltonHansda Title.
  • At the age of 15, she won the 2009 World Archery Championship held in Utah, USA. In the same championship, she won another gold in the women’s recurve team event.
  • In 2010, she won two gold medals at the Delhi Commonwealth Games, one in the individual category and one in the women’s recurve team event.
  • She won her first gold medal at the Archery World Cup in 2012. 
  • At the 2010 Asian Games, she was conquered by North Korean player Kwon UnSil in the individual bronze play-offs but made an incredible performance in women’s recurve team event, winning a bronze medal.
  • She won her first gold medal in recurve individual event at a World Cup in Atlanta, beating Lee-Sung-Jing by six points.
  • Deepika recorded her lowest performance at the 2012 London Olympics, where she lost in the opening round to Amy Oliver of Great Britain.
  • In the 2013 FITA Archery World Cup, she lost gold and settling for silver after being defeated by South Korean player Yon Ok-Hee. 
  • It was her third time to lose in the World Cup final.
  • In the World Championships 2015, she won a silver in recurve team event withLaxmiraniMajhi and RimmelBuriuly losing the final to Russia. Later the same year, she won a bronze medal in the women’s mixed team event at the Asian Championship.
  • In April 2016, she eclipsed the world record of Ki Bo-bae’s (686/720) women’s recurve event.
  • She played a major role for the Indian women’s recurve team during the Rio Olympics 2016.
  • In the Archery World Cup stage 3, Deepika successfully won three gold medals, becoming the 11th archer and 13th triple gold achiever.
  • After 2019, she qualified for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

  • Deepika was born in Ratu Chatti village near Ranchi, Jharkhand, to a financially backward family.
  • Her father, Shivnarayan Mahato, was an auto-rickshaw driver, and her mother, Geeta Mahato, was a nurse in the local hospital.
