Johnson began his Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) career in 2007 and earned his first-round knockout. After that, he won more than eight battles in local shows. He also gets a contract with the WEC by winning the Alaska Fighting Championship.

He has won several World Extreme Cagefighting (WEC) fights. At WEC 52, he defeated Damacio Page through third-round submission. Later, the WEC amalgamated with the UFC, and he used takedowns to defeat Japanese superstar Norifumi Yamamoto at UFC 126.

He also competed against Miguel Torres and Ian McCall. After a streak of victories, Johnson has a winning record in the UFC. He won the UFC Flyweight Championship in 2012 and has fought notable fighters and wrestlers such as Chris Cariaso, Kyoji Horiguchi, and Joseph Benavidez.

Throughout his career, he defeated fighters like Joseph Benavidez and Henry Cejudo while earning Performance of the Night honors. His most recent UFC fight came in 2018 when a split decision at UFC 227 beat him, so he relinquished his UFC flyweight title.
