Giorgio Chiellini set to sign a new contract with Juventus after Euro 2020 success

Veteran Italian centre back Giorgio Chiellini is set to sign a new contract with Serie A side Juventus FC within a few days. The 36 year old has been with the Old Lady since 2005 when he made his move to Turin from his boyhood club Fiorentina, and the rest as they say, is history.

Famous Sky Sports journalist Fabrizio Romano confirmed Chiellini’s extension with the club a few hours ago through his official twitter handle, where he wrote: “Giorgio Chiellini will sign a new contract with Juventus in the next few days/weeks. He’s expected to stay until June 2022 and be part of the project for one more season – he’s been great again yesterday vs Belgium.”

As of now, the defender is a free agent as his contract expired a month ago on 1st June, 2021. The fact that both Juventus and Chiellini did not look interested in signing a new deal, made everyone think that this might be Chiellin’s last year at Turin and that he might announce his retirement at the end of the season. His extension, therefore, has been surprising for many.

Giorgio Chiellini is currently on Euro 2020 duty with his national side Italy. The Azzurri have been phenomenal throughout the tournament and they have made qualifying to the Semi Finals of Euro 2020 look like a piece of cake. Not to forget, they are unbeaten for the last 32 games.

Leonardo Bonucci and Giorgio Chiellini

After failing to qualify for the FIFA World Cup in 2018, Italy have made an extraordinary comeback under head coach Roberto Mancini. And in the process of Italy’s rejuvenation, the contribution of their Centre-back duo, namely Giorgio Chiellini and Leonardo Bonucci, has been immense. Having played all these years together at Juventus, the two defenders have built up a magical understanding which is now helping to keep the Azzuri’s title hopes alive in the tournament.

Giorgio Chiellini has been unable to feature in all the games for Juventus in the last two seasons due to injury concerns. The defender played 17 matches in La Liga this season and just 4 matches last season. However, Chiellini looks in good shape now and he can at least work as a substitute defender for the Bianconeri.
