French winger Ousmane Dembele has been ruled out for the remainder of the Euro 2020 after suffering an injury in the France vs Hungary match two days ago that ended in a 1-1 draw. The French national team made it official through their twitter handle that the FC Barcelona player will not be available for the remaining tournament and wished him a speedy recovery.

“Having hurt his knee in the 1-1 draw with Hungary, Ousmane Dembélé is out for the rest of the Euro. We wish Ousmane a speedy recovery!,” the tweet said.

What happened in the match

Ousmane Dembele was not included in France’s playing XI against Hungary and was brought in to bring some extra flair to the game in the 57th minute when they were in dire need of an equaliser after Hungary’s Attila Fiola scored surprisingly, moments before the half time whistle. Dembele was able to have an immediate impact and France scored in the 66th minute (9 minutes after Dembele was subbed in), through Antoine Griezmann, Dembele’s strike partner at FC Barcelona.

Unfortunately, things didn’t go well for the Frenchman as he had to be subbed off at the 87th minute mark due to what was then being thought of to be a muscle injury. The winger was understandably very upset while leaving the pitch.

France’s head coach Didier Deschamps said in the post match conference that they will have to check thoroughly before coming to a conclusion about the severity of the injury. “Dembele, it’s hit on the tendon, behind the knee, it will be necessary to check. He continued, he wanted to cross and felt a fairly significant discomfort. I brought him out. We will have to watch it,” he said.

It has now been confirmed that Ousmane Dembele has suffered a Knee injury which might keep him off the field for over 3 months. He is thus likely to miss the first couple of games of the upcoming season of La Liga for his club FC Barcelona, which will be a big blow for the Blaugrana who are looking to bounce back this season having made some significant purchases in the transfer market.

Ousmane Dembele has had a long history of injuries. In the four years that he has spent at FC Barcelona so far, he has been injured 11 times, of which which three were serious injuries. His current injury will be the fourth big one in the recent past.

How does Ousmane Dembele’s injury affect FC Barcelona

Ousmane Dembele’s current contract with FC Barcelona is valid until 30th June 2022. President Joan Laporta has been trying for many weeks now to extend the Frenchman’s contract, but it is being reported that Dembele is ignoring the talks about his extension. If Barcelona cannot extend Dembele’s contract, they will have to let him leave for free next season, which they definitely don’t want to. It’s therefore a extend or leave situation for Dembele, in which he will be sold to any interested club if he doesn’t extend at Barca.

However, with Dembele being injured now, things will change. No club will want to buy an injured player and the ones who were earlier interested in his services will prefer to wait until next season to sign him for free. The only option that Barca have now, is to extend the frenchman’s contract and it is now upto Ousmane Dembele to decide whether he wants to stay at Barca or leave in search of a new challenge.
