Holloway was the youngest competitor on the UFC roster when he debuted as an injury replacement for Ricardo Lamas against Dustin Poirier at UFC 143 in 2012.

Holloway fought Conor McGregor on UFC Fight Night 26 on August 17, 2013. A unanimous decision in the fight defeated him. On December 10, 2016, he fought Anthony Pettis for the interim UFC Featherweight Championship at UFC 206.

In 2018, it was reported that Holloway was forced to withdraw from the Edgar bout due to a leg injury.
