Miguel Torres Biography

Miguel Torres Career

For some years, Torres fought primarily in small, unsanctioned events held in nightclubs and bars. As a result, much of his early combat career is undocumented. Before joining the WEC, he frequently competed in regional programs, such as Total Fight Challenge and Ironheart Crown. It is well documented that he held the bantamweight championship in both organizations for some years and participated in these events.

After some years of fight, Torres sought advice and instruction from Carlson Gracie, Sr. As a trainer of numerous world champions, Gracie immediately recognized Torres’s ability and sent him to Brazil, where he would publicly challenge the world. Before Torres’s rise to popularity in the WEC, Gracie believed no one could defeat him at 135 pounds.

His WEC debut happened on September 5, 2007, against Jeff Bedard. Torres submitted Bedard in the first round with a triangle hold and publicly asked for a chance at the championship.

At WEC 32, Torres fought Chase Beebe for the WEC Bantamweight Championship. Torres received a license for his next bout. Torres showed superb striking and an equally fantastic ground game to submit Beebe in the first round and win the WEC Bantamweight Championship.

Miguel Torres UFC Career

On October 28, 2010, the WEC and UFC merged. As a result of the merger, all WEC fighters joined the UFC. On February 5, 2011, at UFC 126, Torres made his promotional debut against fellow WEC veteran Antonio Banuelos. The fight was decided unanimously in his favor.

Torres was scheduled to face English fighters Brad Pickett at UFC 130 on May 28, 2011. Due to an injury, however, Pickett was forced to withdraw and was replaced by future UFC Flyweight Champion Demetrious Johnson. Johnson defeated Torres unanimously (29–28 on all cards). Torres ruled the first round despite being knocked down early, but in rounds two and three, he was outstruck and controlled on the ground, giving Johnson the victory. Torres fought Nick Pace at UFC 139 on November 19, 2011. He won a unanimous decision against Pace (30–27, 30–27, 30–27).

UFC president Dana White announced in an interview with SI.com on December 8, 2011, that Torres had been cut from the UFC due to the following quote from the television show Workaholics that was posted on Torres’ Twitter page: “If a rape van were called a surprise van, more women would enjoy taking rides in them. Everyone loves surprises.”

It was announced in early October 2014 that Torres had signed a contract with Titan Fighting Championship. He debuted on October 31, 2014, against Desmond Green in the main event of Titan FC 31. Torres was knocked out in the first round of the fight.
