Nate Marquardt Early Career

Marquardt began his professional mixed martial arts career in 1999, gathering victories in various promotions before fighting in the Bas Rutten Invitational 4 tournament, the winner of which was to be offered a contract with the Ultimate Fighting Championship. Although Marquardt won the tournament, he was not provided the contract. Instead, he contracted with the Pancrase organization in Japan, which fostered fighters such as Ken Shamrock and Bas Rutten. Marquardt was defeated via submission by Genki Sudo in his debut Pancrase bout.

On November 30, 2003, over a Pancrase championship bout, Marquardt was involved in a brief altercation with Ricardo Almeida. The referee could not quickly separate both fighters after Marquardt submitted to a guillotine choke, and Almeida continued to apply the choke while posing for ringside cameras. After being released, Marquardt punched Almeida in the face, causing both corners, including Renzo Gracie, to rush into the ring.

Renzo surrounded Almeida before kicking Marquardt in the face in the ring. The conflict was ultimately resolved, and Marquardt approached Almeida after the match to offer his congratulations. After Almeida renounced his title in July 2004, Marquardt successfully regained it by defeating Kazuo Misaki at Pancrase: Brave 10.
