Oscar Jack Piastri was born in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, on April 6, 2001. His parents moved from Italy to Australia. Oscar raced remote-controlled cars as a child, and by the time he was nine years old, he had won the world championship for the second class. After meeting a person who had a go-kart, Piastri quickly purchased one for himself. In 2014 as a professional, he competed in several races and championships in Australia.
His karting career began in 2011. In 2015, Oscar started competing with Ricky Flynn Motorsport in European championships. Early in 2016, Piastri signed a sponsorship agreement with his father’s company, HP Tuners, and later that year, he finished sixth in the Formula 4 UAE Championship. In 2017, he was the runner-up in the British F4 championship with the TRS Arden Junior Racing Team.
In 2018, Oscar placed ninth in the Formula Renault Eurocup, and in 2019, he claimed the tournament with R-ace GP. Piastri won the FIA Formula 3 Championship in 2020 and the Formula 2 Championship in 2021 with Prema Racing, becoming the first driver to win three consecutive Formula One feeder series titles.
He joined the Renault Sport Academy (later renamed Alpine Academy) in January 2020 and remained with the academy in 2021. After winning the Formula 2 Championship, Oscar was named the reserve driver for the Alpine F1 Team and permitted to serve as a reserve driver for McLaren.
Alpine announced in August 2022 that Piastri would replace Fernando Alonso in 2023, but Oscar tweeted that he had not signed a contract with Alpine and would not be driving for them. Otmar Szafnauer, the team’s principal proprietor, threatened to sue Piastri, but a 2022 FIA Contract Recognition Board hearing ruled against Alpine.
Oscar began competing for McLaren in 2023 and placed eighth at the Australian Grand Prix, eleventh at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, and nineteenth at the Miami Grand Prix. At the 2023 British Grand Prix, Piastri achieved a Formula One career high by placing fourth place.
