Portugal vs Hungary Highlights: Match Recap

Portugal vs Hungary Highlights: Full

Cristiano Ronaldo’s Portugal had stepped on the field against a comparatively weaker Hungary side as the absolute favourites to win the match pretty easily. It was therefore quite a bummer when the Selecao failed to take the lead till late in the 88th minute.

Hungary’s motive was simple- park the bus and secure one point. It was definitely not going to be easy to achieve against a team like Portugal who have got an attacking powerhouse of sorts. But they had nearly succeeded in their mission had it not been for Portugal’s Rafa Silva. The super sub changed the fate of the match completely.

Coming in as a replacement for Bernado Silva in the 71st minute, he gave the assist to Rafael Gurrerro that led to the breakthrough goal in the 84th minute to give them the lead. It was the same Rafa Silva who won the penalty that was converted by skipper Cristiano Ronaldo (that broke Platini’s record), moments after the first goal. It was followed by a defence splitting pass by Silva that resulted in Cristiano Ronaldo’s second goal.

However, today’s match against Hungary has brought up some questions that Portugal head coach Fernando Santos will have to find the answers to. Apart from a few chances that Diego Jota missed (quite horribly to be honest), the Selecao were unable to create enough chances.

Although they managed to win the match in the dying moments, which is a commendable feat indeed, there was nothing in this Portuguese side that gave hints that they could retain their title.

Having been placed in the Group of death – Group F alongside the likes of Germany and France, the match against Hungary was their easiest group stage match, and they did not win that convincingly enough which raises some serious doubts regarding their future in the tournament.
