Perez is said to be keen in hiring Alonso as Real Madrid’s next manager. Since taking over as manager of German club Bayer Leverkusen in October 2022, the Spaniard has done marvels.

Taking over at the BayArena, the Spaniard inherited a Bayer Leverkusen team that was in a rut, sitting in 16th place in the Bundesliga. They dropped to sixth, but are currently just six points behind SC Freiburg for fourth. Now 13 games into their unbeaten streak, Bayer Leverkusen will face Jose Mourinho’s AS Roma in the Europa League semi-finals.

In the prime of his career, from 2009 to 2014, Alonso was a member of Real Madrid’s roster. He became a contemporary hero at the Santiago Bernabeu after his £30 million transfer from Liverpool in 2009.

During his career with Los Blancos, he won five trophies, including the league championship twice and the UEFA Champions League once.
