Roy Nelson Biography: Roy Nelson is an American MMA fighter who fights in the Heavyweight class. He has competed professionally for the UFC, EliteXC, the IFL, BodogFIGHT, and, most recently, Bellator MMA.

Roy Nelson Biography: Roy Nelson was born on June 20, 1976, in Las Vegas, Nevada, and grew up there, attending Cimarron-Memorial High School, where he participated in wrestling, football, and baseball. Nelson briefly studied karate before enrolling in Ark Wong’s Ng Ga Kuen Shaolin Kung Fu at the age of 15. Nelson briefly worked at a warehouse in 1999. Nelson began training in Brazilian jiu-jitsu in 2000 with UFC veteran John Lewis. Nelson started his mixed martial arts career after seven years as a substitute teacher and after-school program volunteer in Clark County.

Nelson has been a long-time student of Renzo Gracie, the Brazilian jiu-jitsu teacher who awarded him a black belt on August 26, 2009. Nelson was first known for his strong jiu-jitsu skills, having consistently won jiu-jitsu tournaments before his MMA career, including effectively defeating Frank Mir, Brandon Vera, and Diego Sanchez on the same day to win a Grapplers Quest championship in 2003 and competing at the ADCC World Championships the same year.

On April 17, 2004, Nelson made his professional mixed martial arts debut at a tournament. The winner of the Rage on the River Heavyweight Tournament was Nelson, who won both of his matches. Before being signed by the IFL, Nelson compiled a record of 6–1.

As a Ken Shamrock’s Lion’s Den member, Nelson was requested to join the IFL’s Nevada Lions in 2007 & made his promotional debut on January 19, 2007, at IFL: Oakland against veteran Vince Lucero. Nelson won via first-round technical knockout. Nelson won the Heavyweight Championship in the 2007 IFL World Grand Prix by defeating Antoine Jaoude on December 29, 2007. Nelson effectively defended his title twice before the dissolution of the IFL.

Nelson was scheduled to challenge Cheick Kongo, but Kongo’s withdrawal caused the bout to be canceled. Nelson instead faced Junior dos Santos at UFC 117 in a bout to determine the UFC Heavyweight Championship’s No. 1 contender (after Cain Velasquez). Nelson lost by unanimous decision, but he was the first man to take dos Santos to a conclusion. He was able to withstand dos Santos’s diverse attacks. At UFC 125, Nelson was scheduled to face Shane Carwin. Carwin was forced to withdraw from the battle due to a back injury. Nelson was removed from the card completely.

On 14 November 2010, UFC President Dana White announced that Roy Nelson’s UFC career would be postponed due to Nelson’s commitments to another fight promotion. White declined to identify the hype, but sources close to Nelson confirmed that Square Ring Promotions, owned by Roy Jones Jr., claimed to have Nelson under contract. Nelson stated on The MMA Hour with Ariel Helwani that this is old news & he can still compete without issue in the UFC.

Nelson fought Jared Rosholt at UFC Fight Night 82 on 6 February 2016. He won unanimously (30–27, 30–27, 29–28). On 7 July 2016, Nelson fought Derrick Lewis at UFC Fight Night 90. Nelson lost by split decision despite topping his record for most takedowns in a fight with seven.

Nelson fought Antônio Silva at UFC Fight Night 95 on 24 September 2016. He won the contest via second-round TKO. Nelson pushed-kicked referee John McCarthy after the match out of anger over what he believed to be a late quitting. Nelson fought Alexander Volkov at UFC on Fox 24 on 15 April 2017. A unanimous decision in the bout defeated him.
