When Was Volleyball Invented? How to Play Volleyball? What Is a Libero in Volleyball?

Volleyball: Volleyball is a team sport played by two teams of six players divided by a net. Under regulated regulations, each team attempts to score points by grounding a ball on the opposing team’s court. It has been a part of the official Summer Olympic Games program since Tokyo 1964.

When Was Volleyball Invented?

In December 1895, William G. Morgan, a YMCA physical education director in Holyoke, Massachusetts, invented Mintonette, a term taken from the game of badminton, as a diversion to be played indoors and by any number of participants. The game borrowed features from various sports, such as baseball, tennis, and handball. Basketball, another indoor activity invented just ten miles (sixteen kilometers) away in Springfield, Massachusetts, was gaining popularity in the area. Mintonette was created as an indoor sport for elderly YMCA members that was less rough than basketball but still required some athletic effort.

William G. Morgan’s early rules specified a net 6 ft 6 in high, a 25 ft 50 ft court, & any number of players. A match consisted of 9 innings, with 3 serves for each side in each inning and no limit on the number of ball contacts for each team before delivering the ball to the opposing team’s court. In the event of a serving error, a second attempt was allowed. Except for the first-try serve, hitting the ball into the net was considered a foul (resulting in a point loss or a side-out).

Alfred Halstead, an observer, recognized the volleying feature of the game during its first exhibition match in 1896, played at the International YMCA Training School (now known as Springfield College), and the game immediately became known as volleyball (it was initially spelled as two words: “volley ball”). The International YMCA Training School significantly adjusted volleyball rules, spreading the game nationwide to various YMCAs. Spalding gave guides with detailed instructions and rules for the sport in the early 1900s through its publishing company American Sports Publishing Company.

How to Play Volleyball?

It’s a good idea to start by catching and tossing the ball to obtain a feel for the rules while keeping the ball in play for longer. Once you’ve mastered the rules and the rhythm, you may begin bringing hits into the game.

This is where the ball is received from the server and passed to the playmaker. This usually happens with a quick, controlled underhand bump with minimum arm swing. Rather than a hit, it’s more of a bump.

In volleyball, the setter is the playmaker. They position the ball so an attacker can shoot and score a point for their team. Overhead setting occurs when players place both hands over their forehead, forming a triangle with their thumbs and index fingers. They push the ball up with their fingertips as the attacker prepares to shoot.

This is one of the most impressive-looking moves in the game. A spike is typically defined as a player running, jumping, and hitting the ball over the net with a hard swing. This generally is a move for an attacker or shooter, as heavy hits usually gain points. If you’re starting, avoid spiking unless you can continue a long rally.

A block is a type of net defense move. When an attacker moves to shoot, a maximum of three players from the opposing team approach the net and jump just behind the attacker with their arms up. When the ball crosses the net, it is blocked by the players and moves into their side or back towards the opposite team.

When the ball is on the ground following an attack, a defender from the back row can rush or dive forward to bump it back up and pass it to another team member.

What Are Kills in Volleyball?
