Raphael Varane agrees to personal terms with Man United until 2026 as talks with Real Madrid continue

Raphael Varane has agreed with Manchester United over a contract until 2026, but there remains no deal in place with Real Madrid for the defender. The Red Devils have not submitted any official bid to United but are in talks with the Spanish club as reported by Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano.

According to Fabrizio Romano, Manchester United are in direct contacts with Real Madrid for Raphael Varane for one week. Varane wants a premier league experience but he’ll be respectful. He’s not breaking his relationship with Real.

According to Goal, Madrid have reluctantly accepted that Varane is likely to leave this summer as he seeks a new challenge, after spending the last 10 years with the Liga giants.

Varane’s contract with the Galactico’s ends in the summer of 2022. The French centre back has now agreed personal terms with Manchester United but he has not officially requested to leave and his future lies in the hands of the two clubs. Varane, for his part is also in no rush and out of respect for Madrid president Florentino Perez and the club’s supporters, he will not be pushing for an immediate move.

El Confidencial have brought further news of the deal that will bring Varane to United this summer.

Varane’s salary at Real stand at €6m per year. As per the Spanish network, Varane is currently on a package worth £170,000 a week. United have offered double the salary he receives at Real. That £340,000 a week deal will put the defender among their highest earners. Only David De Gea is believed to earn more at the club.

Reports claims Real president Florentino Perez is now willing to let Varane depart. Firstly, he knows he is unable to match the package United are offering. It is reported that Perez feels Varane’s game would suffer without Sergio Ramos alongside him and with Perez unwilling to lose him on a free next summer, his sale to United should soon be finalised.

According to El Confidential, the club are looking to push United towards paying around £52m for the French centre-back, who is reportedly seeking a new challenge in the Premier League.

The asking price for the French centre-back is €50m. The 28-year-old is currently in the final year of his contract, hence the relatively low fee for a 28-year-old who has plenty of top-level experience. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is a big fan of the 28-year-old and is expecting to pair the defender with Harry Maguire. Varane has won four Champions Leagues titles during his time at the Bernabeu. He also lifted the World Cup with France in 2018.

Speaking on the Football Terrace podcast, Eurosport’s Dean Jones claimed United were growing in confidence a deal for Varane could be done.

“Manchester United can see the finish line on this deal,” Jones said.

“And that’s the place they’ve dreamed of being in recent weeks.

“They honestly were never sure it would go this far. And I spoke to someone over the weekend and I could really tell that the optimism, and the hope, were really there.

“This week was always going to be a big week because it’s a telling time for Madrid to get involved.

“And United, obviously, know the player is keen at this point. They finally believe the player was serious about coming to United.

“And now Real Madrid have been informed that is the case. Obviously, now, it’s all about a fee.

“United do not want to go over £50m. So, I’m a bit sceptical about this being done in the next few hours. There is still a lot of negotiating to be done.

“But things are definitely heading in the right direction and Varane does expect to become a United player.”

Real Madrid signed Varane for £10m from Lens a decade ago. Since then, the defender has proved his worth and has won four Champions League titles in his time at Bernabeu. Varane was hoping to resolve his future as soon as possible, but it seems probable that he will train under Carlo Ancelotti on Thursday after his holiday. The Real Madrid boss is up to date with his situation and is not expecting to have Varane available next season, but he wishes to treat him like any other player until his future has been decided.
