Renzo Gracie MMA Career

Renzo Gracie debuted in the Brazilian vale tudo circuit in January 1992, facing kickboxer Luiz Augusto Alvarado in his maiden fight. Renzo controlled the match and won through rear naked choke submission. He then moved to the United States to teach Brazilian jiu-jitsu. In February of 2000, he was defeated by Kiyoshi Tamura. Gracie retired after losing against Matt Hughes in April 2010. Renzo retired in June 2018 to face Yuki Kondo at ONE Championship Reign of Kings. He won by rear naked choke submission, extending his professional MMA record to 14-7-1.

World Combat Championships

Christopher Peters, the son of Jon Peters, created the World Combat Championships, a no-holds-barred event, in October 1995. Due to his Brazilian jiu-jitsu background, Gracie got on the grapplers’ side in the event’s finals, which featured the champions of distinct tournaments for strikers and grapplers. His first match was against Ben Spijkers, a Dutch judoka who had enticed Gracie into the press conference and pranked him in his hotel room the night before.

Spijkers obtained his first takedown, but Renzo replied with two of his own, took him down with headbutts and elbow strikes, and then strangled him for the win. As a form of retaliation for the stunt, Gracie walked on Spijkers’s head as he walked away after the bout. He later apologized for his actions. Next, Gracie fought Phil Benedict, a striker, and despite receiving a powerful right in the opening seconds, he executed a takedown and defeated Benedict with ground and pound from the mount. Gracie defeated kickboxer James Warring in the finals with a neck crank at roughly the same time.

Gracie initially entered the WCC to confront Bart Vale, who would also be competing, because Vale had proclaimed that smaller opponents, such as Renzo, feared facing him. However, Vale relinquished his position in the tournament after his first match, so the fight never occurred. Producer Peters planned to host a second event in which Gracie and Vale fought in a “super fight” format, but these plans were canceled.

Renzo Gracie’s UFC Career

After a three-year absence, Gracie signed a six-fight contract with the UFC in December 2009. She faced former UFC Welterweight Champion Matt Hughes at UFC 112 in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, on April 10, 2010. Although Gracie fought reasonably well against the Americans, he began to receive a growing amount of leg strikes. By an agreement of the second round, the fight was shifting in Hughes’ favor.

Hughes scored in the third round with a series of uppercuts and punches that injured Gracie. Hughes defeated Gracie with a combination of strikes. Gracie was defeated by TKO at 4:40 of the third round against Matt Hughes, becoming the second Gracie to succumb to Hughes, the first being his famous cousin Royce Gracie at UFC 60.
