Barcelona could have signed Kylian Mbappe in 2017 but opted for Ousmane Dembele instead, reveals former chief Javier Bordas

Mbappe could have joined Barca to replace Neymar

With Neymar moving out, the Blaugrana needed to fill the position with a new signing and ventured the market with a lump sum of 222 million euros. Barcelona eventually landed Ousmane Dembele for more than 100 million euros in the same transfer window from Borussia Dortmund. However, former Barca director Javier Bordas confessed that they had the opportunity to snap up Kylian Mbappe easily but opted for Dembele, as per DailyMail. The Frenchman had performed well in Bundesliga and emerged as a rising star in the black and yellow shirt but could never make his mark in Barcelona.

He is still finding his prowess due to his repetitive injuries and lack of physical fitness to make it to the first-team squad consistently. Koeman has expressed his anguish over the indiscipline of the Frenchman after he arrived late to the training session by 15 minutes.

Barcelona and Mbappe: a lost opportunity

It was the decision of technical secretary Robert Fernandez to sign a player who would provide width to the team and creation from the flanks. Fernandez found the right player to meet his demands but could not determine if he would not flop owing to recurring fitness problems. Barcelona has missed one of the golden chances to Mbappe back then and they may never find another chance with their economic instability.

Mbappe signed for Paris Saint Germain on loan that very year and went on to join the Ligue 1 permanently from AS Monaco. Since then, the Golden Boy has not looked back scoring almost on every appearance for the French club. He almost won his first European trophy in the last campaign having lifted the World Cup in 2018. Barcelona would have had different results if Mbappe joined them instead of the ailing Dembele. The Catalan outfit is currently waiting to sign Memphis Depay and Eric Garcia next year for free.
