Manchester United to compete with FC Barcelona and Real Madrid for Bayern midfielder Leon Goretzka

Leon Goretzka has entered the final 12 months of his contract at Bayern Munich with big clubs like Manchester United, Real Madrid and FC Barcelona showing interest in the 26-year-old. Contract negotiations between Leon Goretzka and Bayern Munich may have reached nowhere but the Manchester United target is still hopeful of signing an extension with the Bundesliga giants.

According to Goal, talks have stalled due to differences over salary expectations, although reports suggest that Goretzka is demanding for an annual wage packet of €20 million which has been denied.

But Bayern are strict over their salary limits, with Robert Lewandowski leading the way, and Goretzka’s representatives are asking for €20m. That is some way above Bayern’s last offer of €10m.

The midfielders contract ends in 2022 and the player has informed his agents to explore other options. Leon Goretzka has informed Bayern CEO Oliver Kahn, sports director Hasan Salihamidzic and president Herbert Hainer that he is planning for a long stay at Bayern despite these recent difficulties, a message he has communicated on several occasions over the past few months. The 26-year-old’s contractual situation has attracted attention from some of Europe’s most powerful clubs. Real Madrid, Barcelona and United have all been mentioned as possible suitors for Goretzka. His management team therefore has declined to answer any enquiries from other clubs while talks remain ongoing.

However, Bayern’s new head coach Julian Nagelsmann said upon arriving at the club at the start of July: “I would be very happy to have many years together with Leon because I think very highly of him, because I will have an excellent collaboration with him and because he is one of the most dangerous midfielders in Europe.”

He told Sky Sports in Germany: “Yes, he’s up for FC Bayern, he’s up for the team. I think you can see that in the way he plays. It’s also quite normal for a player to always think about his future. “We all want him to stay here, he is an outstanding player who, with his goal threat, is certainly one of the most dangerous players in the Bundesliga, and also one of the most dangerous midfielders in Europe. For me he’s a cornerstone in the team.”

Manchester United have made contact with the 26-year-old Germany international over the possibility of a move this summer or as a free agent next year. Reports in Germany event go as far to say United have made Goretzka ‘a concrete £200,000-a-week offer’ to join them next summer.

According to Sports Bild, there is ‘irritation’ in the Leon Goretzka camp over a lack of progress in offering a new contract on improved terms. And they report that United have tabled a ‘concrete offer’ for the player to come to Old Trafford when he becomes a free agent next June.
