Paulo Fonseca betrayed by Paratici: The Italian manager wasn’t even aware of Tottenham snub

Tottenham’s managerial spot remains vacant as the Paulo Fonseca deal broke down on Thursday. Former Roma and Shakhtar manager was expected to sign the deal after verbal agreement was completed last week. According to Italian journalist Fabrizio Romanio, the deal collapsed because of issues relating to tax that became apparent to Fonseca in the past 48 hours. Italian law provided him with tax breaks that do not apply in the UK and he wanted his pay adjusted accordingly. Tottenham were not interested to cover this gap for his salary, hence the deal collapsed.

Sky Sports Italia says that the deal has been scuppered by financial reasons, but sources told Sky Sports News the decision was taken by Spurs.

Sky Sports News understands there were disagreements between Paulo Fonseca and Spurs also on the recruitment of his backroom staff.

After verbal agreement being completed on Monday, Fonseca travelled for a short break in Ukraine, where his TV presenter wife Katerina is from. She told her Instagram followers this week that she had

“Butterflies in my stomach because the new page begins”.

Fonseca and his family were preparing to fly over to the UK before the end of this month. Then Fonseca was suddenly informed that that deal was off. Negotiations between the two parties ended on Thursday and Spurs have decided to focus on other targets. But both sides of the deal claim that finances were not the reason behind the sudden withdrawal.

Gennaro Gattuso, who left Fiorentina on Thursday, had emerged as the latest leading candidate for the Spurs job after talks with Paulo Fonseca broke down. Gattuso who joined Fiorentina just 23 days before left the club over disagreements in transfer policy and the club said it was “by mutual agreement”. He won the Copa Italia with Napoli in 2020. However, Napoli missed out on Champion’s league qualification on the last day.

Spurs recently appointed their new managerial director- Fabio Paratici. Paratici opened talks with Paulo Fonseca after Antonio Conte talks for the job collapsed. According to Sky Sports News, Paratici is a huge fan of Gennaro Gattuso and considers it a more appealing appointment despite Fonseca topping their managerial Wishlist last week.

Paratici also attempted to appoint former Chelsea, Juventus and Italy head coach Antonio Conte but talks broke down earlier in June. Gattuso, who left Fiorentina on Thursday, has emerged as the latest leading candidate for the Spurs job.

It is believed that there might be a link between Gattuso suddenly leaving Fiorentina and Fonseca’s deal collapsing. When the news came that Gattuso was available (on Thursday) that forced a sudden change in direction and Spurs broke off the talks with Fonseca.

However, it is now being rumoured that Tottenham Hotspurs are no more considering Gennaro Gattuso as a managerial option any more which means that the Londoners start from ground zero again.

Fabrizio Romano has claimed that many new names have emerged now, including that of former Barcelona manager Ernesto Valverde, as potential candidates to take charge of Spurs.

The fixtures for the upcoming Premier League season have been announced and the league is scheduled to re-start this August. Spurs better hurry in appointing a new manager.
