IPL 2020: The Indian Premier League (IPL) and its relation with controversies is not a new thing. Just a few days ago, KXIP lost a game against the Delhi Capitals due to an umpiring error. Now, the commentary has come under the scanner, which has also definitely happened in the past in Indian cricket. Harsha Bhogle and Sanjay Manjrekar have clashed with each other in the commentary box, which created a major uproar. Now, the focal point shifts to the Indian legend, Sunil Gavaskar, who has created a new controversy. (IPL 2020)
The incident happened when RCB captain Virat Kohli was batting against the Kings XI Punjab in the third over the innings. Gavaskar went on to talk about the batting practice of Kohli during the lockdown and stated that Kohli has only faced Anushka Sharma’s bowling during the lockdown. This is not enough for Virat Kohli’s practice. However, the social media completely misquoted his statement and Twitter went berserk about it. (IPL 2020)
The fans heavily attacked Gavaskar and he has been in the headlines since the end of the match. Sunil Gavaskar’s statement on air was, “Lockdown tha to sirf Anushka ki bowling ki practice ki unhone, wo video dekhi hai (a reference to aforementioned video), usse to kuch nahi hona hai.” This roughly translates as, that Kohli faced against Anushka’s bowling only during the lockdown. I had also watched a video, but that was not enough.

However, Anushka Sharma might have been hurt by Gavaskar’s statements. She raised her voice against Gavaskar for dragging her name to cricket. She even said that she heard Gavaskar’s Hindi commentary during the match and felt hurt. She posted on social media and asked him to clarify his statements and the reason behind dragging her name while commenting on her husband’s batting performance. “That, Mr Gavaskar, your message is distasteful is a fact but I would love for you to explain why you thought of making such a sweeping statement on a wife accusing her for her husband’s game? “I am sure over the years you have respected the private lives of every cricketer while commentating on the game. Don’t you think you should have an equal amount of respect for me and us? I am sure you can have many other words and sentences in your mind to use to comment on my husband’s performance from last night or are your words only relevant if you use my name in the process?
“It’s 2020 and things still don’t change for me. When will I stop getting dragged into cricket and stop being used to pass sweeping statements? Respected Mr Gavaskar, you are a legend whose names stand tall in this gentleman’s game. Just wanted to tell you what I felt when I heard you say this,” Anushka Sharma wrote in her Instagram story.

May be, Sunil Gavaskar may not have intended to drag Anushka Sharma’s name into cricket. However, her strong response and also his statements going viral and controversial in social media might force him to come out and clarify his statements. It will be interesting to see what he responds now. (IPL 2020)
